Order of Christian Initiation for Adults

Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (O.C.I.A.) at Saint Martin of Tours

OCIA Program: OCIA begins each year on the Tuesday after Labor Day in September and goes until the Easter Vigil Mass in the Spring, usually in April. OCIA meets every Tuesday from 6:00 – 7:30 PM in the Church Rectory, with a three-week winter break for the holidays. OCIA is a process where baptized converts (candidates) and the unbaptized (catechumens) prepare to enter the Catholic Church. The program combines prayer, catechesis, and liturgical rites. The OCIA textbook is the “Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.” In person attendance is required, as this is not a remote learning class. Each person will have a Catholic Sponsor who serves as a mentor. Participants will receive direct instruction from a Catholic priest.

OCIA Requirements: The person must be at least age 18 at the time OCIA begins, as OCIA is only for adults. Also, the person must be canonically free to enter the Catholic Church – without obstacles such as morality and marriage issues requiring annulments. Living a prayerful and moral life while attending Mass (but not receiving holy communion) at Saint Martin of Tours is a strong step before beginning OCIA. It also helps to study Catholicism from solid sources. Also, do not attempt the sacrament of confession during this time – it is only for Catholics. OCIA does not require certainty about becoming Catholic, but it should be a strong intention. The program assumes a commitment to Catholicism that progresses with each formation phase.

OCIA Registration: Participants are required to meet with the priest instructor during the summer before OCIA for an interview before registration. The interview is to answer questions, determine readiness, and establish canonical freedom to enter the Catholic Church. If approved, the participant fills out the OCIA registration form. There is no cost for OCIA. Please “try on” Catholicism for a time before applying for OCIA. Then, if you want to apply for OCIA, call the parish office at 502.582.2827. Thank you!
